YNW Melly Could Be Facing the Death Penalty

While YNW Melly awaits for his trial behind bars inside Broward County Jail on double murder charges, TMZ and Pitchfork report that Florida prosecutors are seeking the death penalty in his case.

In court documents obtained, Assistant State Attorney Kristine Bradley claims that the killings were premeditated and that Melly, born Jamell Demons, allegedly committed the crimes because of “pecuniary” gains. The prosecutors also claim that YNW Melly is a gang member.

Melly is being represented by Boosie BadAzz’s former lawyer, Jason Roger Williams, alongside Brad Cohen and Nicole Burdett. “That was always their plan. They’ve indicated that since the beginning of this case,” Williams said to Billboard. “The prosecution wasn’t hiding the ball on this. They were very clear in articulating this was their plan.”

The 19-year-old upstart’s legal team believes once all the evidence is presented, it will prove that Melly is completely innocent. Representatives for YNW Melly declined to comment.

Last March, Melly pled not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder. The Florida rapper was originally arrested in February after evidence led Miramar Police to believe that he and his alleged accomplice, Cortlen “YNW Bortlen” Henry shot and killed their friends Christopher “Juvy” Thomas Jr. and Anthony “Sak” Williams.
