Six months after Hurricane Maria, an estimated half a million dogs were wandering the streets of Puerto Rico. The Sato Project has been rescuing and rehabilitating “satos” or, stray dogs, in Puerto Rico since 2011. After the storm, the nonprofit flew humanitarian supplies in on empty planes and put animals on to be flown out of the island for adoption.
