At a time when the world depends on creative problem solvers, and when the looming threat of technology is forcing us to examine our human strengths, mathematics finds itself in need of an upgrade.

Mathematician turned educator Dr Junaid Mubeen shows that there is more to mathematics than symbol pushing and high-speed calculation. Dr Mubeen presents an alternative brand of the subject that is premised on patterns and logic, and is accessible to us all. Dr Junaid Mubeen is a research mathematician turned educator working at the nexus of education and innovation. Junaid is Director of Education at Whizz Education, where he oversees the educational strategy of the virtual tutoring platform, Maths-Whizz, which reaches hundreds of thousands of students worldwide. He also runs the Oxford Maths Club, delivering interactive maths courses to primary students. Junaid writes and speaks on a number of educational topics and is co-editor of the online publication, Q.E.D., which seeks to reimagine the learning and teaching of mathematics. He earned fleeting fame as a series winner of Countdown in 2008. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
