Why Apple TV Plus is basically free
@TheVerge 101

Apple TV Plus is the company’s first major foray into original television. It’s also Apple’s attempt at making a mark in the streaming wars. That’s partially why Apple is giving it away for free, echoing Amazon’s Prime Video strategy. But it won’t always be free, and Apple knows that.

CES is about new TVs. The week we spend in Las Vegas every year is a showcase for the present and the far-off future of home entertainment. CES 2019 was no different, and we saw a lot on the show floor that’s got us excited. But 8K, the biggest TV trend at CES for yet another year, still feels like a fantasy that’s not making much progress towards becoming a living room reality. The iSKN Slate Repaper drawing tablet is geared toward artists and is a huge improvement from the original Slate in 2016. The original product was unique in that it let the user fit magnetic rings on their own pens and pencils, which would work with the magnets in the tablet to convert strokes on to a companion app in real time. You could place any paper on the tablet, clip it in place, and start drawing. Back then, I was disappointed by the tablet’s bugginess and sensitivity, but this fourth-generation product fixes a lot of those issues. The Royole Flexpai is officially the world’s first foldable phone, but its maker has achieved the feat by rushing the device out to market way before it’s ready for primetime. The threat of Samsung and Huawei stealing the small Chinese company’s thunder was simply too much to resist, and that’s how we ended up with the unfinished, unpolished Flexpai on exhibit at CES 2019. The Surface Pro X is the Windows 10 computer Microsoft has tried to make for years. It is a beautiful, well-made hybrid tablet device that runs on an ARM processor co-developed between Microsoft and Qualcomm. The base model costs $1,138.99 with a keyboard. But like previous attempts, Microsoft hasn’t done enough to offset the compromises this aspirational computer asks of customers. AI in video games is very different than the AI in self-driving cars, smart home devices, and natural language algorithms. That’s because game developers have been sticking to the basics, but all that is starting to change. Researchers today are incorporating more cutting-edge AI advancements into games. In the future, these tools could result in games designing themselves with characters that can learn and adapt to the player.

Microsoft is making a new HoloLens headset, called HoloLens 2. But, it's only getting sold to companies, not consumers. Meant for professionals who work with their hands and not on computers, the new HoloLens has an improved field of view and doesn’t clip as much as the original. Dieter Bohn visited Microsoft’s campus to get an early look at the new HoloLens 2 headset.

Rats are social and chatty critters, but most of their chatter is above the frequency that human ears can hear. If researchers could listen to what rats are “saying,” it could change countless experiments. This week, we try our hand at recording ultrasonic rat squeaks, and visit some scientists who built their own software to make sense of what we captured. You can listen to some of the rat calls here: http://bit.ly/2trAh8M Read more here: http://bit.ly/2InTEKq Subscribe: http://bit.ly/2FqJZMl Like Verge Science on Facebook: http://bit.ly/2hoSukO Follow on Twitter: http://bit.ly/2Kr29B9 Follow on Instagram: https://goo.gl/7ZeLvX Read More: http://www.theverge.com Community guidelines: http://bit.ly/2D0hlAv Subscribe to Verge on YouTube for explainers, product reviews, technology news, and more: http://goo.gl/G5RXGs

Focals smart glasses by North use some of the tech previously seen in Intel’s Vaunt glasses. They project a laser onto your eye and show notifications, map directions, and text messages. Unlike Google Glass though, the Focals do not have any cameras. We reviewed the new smart glasses and found that while the technology might be the best yet, it’s far from perfect. The Canon EOS R is the company’s first with a full frame, 30-megapixel CMOS sensor, and a brand-new RF lens mount to go with it. These lenses have a control ring that can be customized to settings such as ISO, shutter speed, aperture, and more. But instead of having image stabilization integrated into the camera, like Sony, Canon builds stabilization into the lenses themselves. We had two Verge video directors put the EOS R to the test. HP Spectre Folio starts around $1300 and is perhaps the most interesting laptop I’ve used in a long time. We've seen and used laptops made out of all kinds of different plastic and metal, but this one is made out of actual leather. If it works, it could mean you'll have a super unique computer instead of just another gray slab.
